Maccabee Shelley

“Mac” is a unique artist who works with glass.  He collects glass at the recycling place on the campus of CSULB and crushes it.  He takes this crushed glass and fills a mold with it where he introduces extreme heat so the glass melts.  He will use a flame to polish it or use a saw to cut out a cross section.  From there he will find something that came out of this and try to encourage it to be more profound or will inspire him to do something else.  An example as in one of his art pieces, there was a sharp shard on top of the mold and he tried to encourage it to remain sharp or make it even sharper.  Another one of his art pieces had “popcorn-like” punctures on the side and he worked with it to make it more profound.  He got into this form of art when a former coworker molded smaller pieces of glass and it sparked his interest.  He also is interested in the chemistry of the glass and clay he uses together.  He used to be a geology mentor and an environmental science student and he was always looking at the geology of the Earth, which you can see how his art pieces have a similar look of the geology of the Earth to them.

This is the art piece with the "popcorn-like" indents on the sides.
